[Essential fatty acids in infant nutrition].

چکیده
An extensive clinical study is being made to evaluate the role of the essential fatty acids in infant feeding. After care ful explanation of the nature of the study, the mothers of several hundred infants have chosen to participate. The chief criteria of selection are that the parents seem anxious to co operate and that the infants are normal neonates. The individ ual subjects include children of physicians, medical students as well as those seen in the Well Baby Clinics. As an inte gral part of the study the healthy young infants are given one of 5 different milk mixtures which vary in their content of fat and linoleic acid. One group received a milk mixture practically devoid of fat and because of the unsatisfactory progress of a number of the infants, this phase of the study has been terminated. The findings seem worthy of presenta tion at this time.

Dietary omega 3 fatty acids and the developing brain.
The omega-3 fatty acids are essential dietary nutrients and one of their important roles is providing the fatty acid with 22 carbons and 6 double bonds known as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for nervous tissue growth and function. Inadequate intakes of omega-3 fatty acids decrease DHA and increase omega-6 fatty acids in the brain. Decreased DHA in the developing brain leads to deficits in neurogen...

Human milk provides all the dietary essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (LA; 18:2n-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (18:3n-3), as well as their longer-chain more-unsaturated metabolites, including arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) and DHA (22:6n-3) to support the growth and development of the breast-fed infant. Human milk levels of LA have increased in Westernized nations from mean levels (g/100 g total f...
متن کاملDietary Fatty acids in growth and development.
A newborn infant will double his/her weight in the first 3 months of life and double it again in the next year. Such a rapid growth rate demands adequate nutrition. Fat is a vital source of energy for the growing infant. In breast milk for example, 50% of the energy is in the form of fat. The fat of breast milk contains a full complement of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), including the two ...
متن کاملThe role of essential fatty acids in neural development: implications for perinatal nutrition.
The brain is 60% structural lipid, which universally uses arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4n6) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) for growth, function, and integrity. Both acids are consistent components of human milk. Experimental evidence in animals has demonstrated that the effect of essential fatty acid deficiency during early brain development is deleterious and permanent. The risk of neurod...
متن کاملBiochemical homeostasis and body growth are reliable end points in clinical nutrition trials.
Studies of biochemical homeostasis and/or body growth have been included as outcome variables in most nutrition trials in paediatric patients. Moreover, these outcome variables have provided important insights into the nutrient requirements of infants and children, and continue to do so. Examples of the value of such studies in improving parenteral nutrition, in defining essential fatty acid me...
